Subject: [ZPAJOL] APPEL URGENT (fwd)

Christine

Subject: URGENT ACTION - HALT REMOVAL OF JAHALIN

URGENT ACTION - HALT REMOVAL OF THE JAHALIN
Released by CPT - Hebron

Today, Israeli authorities came to the village where the Bedouin Jahalin have
lived for over forty years, declared a closed military zone and forcibly
removed one family. The two parents and five children were forced to leave
without explanation and presumably taken to the Israeli proposed sight of the
new Jahalin village, 500 metres from a Jerusalem garbage dump. Israeli law
states prohibits human habitation within 2000m of waste disposal sites.

According to Israeli peace activist Amos Gvirtz, the Israeli government
removed only one family as a test. He said, "If public reaction is limited,
they will remove the rest. It's very important to mount a large protest now
to show the Israeli authorities that these actions are unacceptable and that
the removal of the Jahalin to the sight the government has proposed is
intollerable."

The Jahalin currently live on West Bank land where they were forced to go
after Israeli authorities removed them from their native land in the Negev
desert in the 50's. Israel's largest settlement, Ma'ale Adumim, is located
beside the Jahalin and it's expansion has made the Jahalin expendable in
order to seize the land.

The Jahalin have proposed many alternatives for their relocation, including
their natural habitat in the Negev. Israel's best offer is land owned by the
Palestinian village of Abu Dis, adjacent to the garbage dump. Environmental
authorities have declared the site unsuitable for human habitation. "I
believe the Israeli authorities are trying to create problems between the
Jahalin and the people of Abu Dis by forcing them to live on land owned by
the villagers," Gvirtz said. "The government hopes the conflict between
those two groups will detract attention from Israeli policy which created the
problem."

Past attempts to forcibly remove the Jahalin from their land have been
postponed because of public disapproval. Please voice your disapproval to
the following authorities.
